2019-2020 Autumn: Awesome Africa
Our classroom has had a mini makeover in readiness for our new topic of Awesome Africa! Please see the uploaded topic web for further details of the curriculum content. We ask that you choose one activity each week from the homework grid to support your child's home learning. Please also continue to read daily with your child to support their developing decoding skills, fluency and a love of reading for pleasure.
Our new topic is off to a great start! We have been exploring the story 'Handa's Surprise' and within this we have used our senses to explore and taste a range of exotic fruits found in the story. We have thought carefully about vocabulary to describe the setting and how a story is structured. We finished our story writing by re-writing the story of Handa and some children even managed to innovate and create their own versions!
Our maths focus has been to name, identify and describe the properties of 2D and 3D shapes. We are also really enjoying our short maths fluency sessions at the end of the day which include opportunities to recall and apply previously taught concepts using a range of equipment.
Within science, we have been classifying animals into groups and thinking about different characteristics. The children have been able to speak with confidence and clarity to explain the different animal groupings and the characteristics of each!
Below is a small selection of photographs taken within our learning environment. All of the resources and areas of provision are carefully resourced to allow for meaningful and contextualised child-led learning. High quality interactions with adults underpin our approach and allow learning to be extended 'in the moment' alongside focus work with small groups.
